Dapeng Liu
Born in Beijing in 1982, Dapeng Liu is a Sydney-based artist who has worked full-time since 2014. Primarily working in oil painting, his practice explores landscape as a perceptual and philosophical space in which natural forms, constructed systems, memory, and light intersect. Through a tension between abstraction and representation, his work considers how contemporary vision reshapes historical understandings of landscape.
Liu holds a Master of Arts (Research) in Art History from the University of Sydney, where he was awarded a full Australian Government postgraduate scholarship. His background in art history informs a critically engaged practice that draws on historical traditions of Chinese landscape painting, while examining evolving relationships between humans and nature under contemporary conditions of perception.
He was a finalist in the 2026 Sovereign Asian Art Prize - the most prestigious contemporary art award in the Asia-Pacific region presented annually in Hong Kong since 2004. He is also a three-time finalist in the Archibald Prize, Australia’s most significant art award. He has exhibited widely in commercial and institutional contexts, and has participated in both local and international art fairs. He is represented by Art Atrium and Art Atrium 48 in Sydney, and Otomys in Melbourne. His works are held in public and private collections in Australia and internationally.
